A beautiful theatre has been given back to Bury St Edmunds and the country. A theatre that will bring the treasures of the past to life and give unimaginable opportunities to the plays of the future. The Theatre Royal is not only a superb piece of early 19th century architecture, it is a living theatre.

I have loved it ever since I - a stage-struck teenager, full of curiosity - climbed into the building during the time it was being used as a barrel store by Greene and King Brewery. Even then, with the dust and the barrels, the beauty of this theatre shone through. It is a joy for me to see it now so wonderfully restored.

The regeneration of this lovely playhouse is little short of a miracle, and the dedication of all the people who have worked tirelessly to make it live again will never be forgotten. Congratulations and thank you...."

Sir Peter Hall
President, Restoration Appeal

It is not often, in one's lifetime, that one is fortunate enough to be associated with a project of real significance. During my career I have worked in many fine theatres across the country, indeed the world. Yet the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds holds an unrivalled place in my thoughts. Once restored this fabulous theatre will be able to achieve something of real significance."

Timothy West CBE
Patron of the Restoration Appeal

My enthusiasm for the restoration of the Theatre Royal at Bury St Edmunds knows no bounds. It is a vital piece of our theatrical heritage."

Stephen Fry

The Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds holds a unique place in the history of theatre in this country as well as a special place in my heart."

Dame Judi Dench CBE

The Theatres Trust recognises Bury's Theatre Royal as one of the UK's best loved and most historic theatres. Its rescue from life as a beer barrel store to a thriving regional venue has inspired many others across the UK. Now that transformation, begun in 1965, has been triumphantly completed with the jewel-like auditorium authentically restored alongside new facilities. You can be very proud of what you have achieved - and theatregoers can look forward to a unique treat."

Mhora Samuel
Director of The Theatres Trust

It was always a huge pleasure to tour into Bury's Theatre Royal. The theatre has such a natural intelligence and electricity, it is so intimate and excited at the same time, that it often felt like returning to the best moments of rehearsals when we played there. It is a great theatre, and I wish it very well for the future."

Dominic Dromgoole
Artistic Director, Globe Theatre, London

The Theatre Royal is a very special place. They got a lot of things right in the 18th Century including theatres. The theatre provides an essential catholic and hospitable stop for all touring companies. Welcome back. You have been much missed."
